The
two Dems who made a “no” vote on the impeachment inquiry vote—Collin Peterson and
Jeff Van Drew—are expected to join all Rep. within the House in opposing all
articles of impeachment votes as it comes to the floor.
However,
the lingering question is whether they’ll be joined up by additional Trump
district Dems, and if the answer is yes, how many are going to join them. No additional
moderate Dems publicly have stated their intentions to oppose the impeachment
vote on the House floor; however, Politico reported recently that a circle
of 10 - 12 of them are putting together a strategy that censures Trump rather
than impeaching him—an alternative choice that they hope is going to make them appear
more reasonable than the forces driving their party towards a partisan
impeachment vote.
According
to Politico’s Melanie Zanona and Sarah Ferris, ‘A small circle of House Dems is
floating around the concept of censuring Trump rather than impeaching him,
according to lawmakers who are familiar with the conversations.’
‘These
Dems, all representing districts that Donald Trump won in the year 2016,
huddled recently in a last-minute bid to weigh extra— although unlikely —
options to punish Trump for his part in the scandal as the House hastens toward
a vote on impeachment. The circle of around ten members involved Reps. Ben
McAdams, Anthony Brindisi, Kurt Schrader, and Josh Gottheimer.’
